Between Sunnah and Bid'ah: The Measure of Loving the Prophet ﷺ.
Between Sunnah and Bid'ah: The Measure of Loving the Prophet ﷺ.
The Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent to all of mankind as a mercy, a guide, and a source of blessings. Through him, Allah showed humanity the straight path that leads to His path and pleasure. “And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Qur’an 21:107)
There is no path to Allah more perfect, more complete, or more beloved than the path of the Messenger ﷺ. Whoever seeks guidance outside his Sunnah will find nothing but loss, for after his way, there is no other path that leads to true success or to Jannah. “Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins.”
(Qur’an 3:31)
A person is only upon the truth when he follows the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, adheres to his guidance, and walks in his footsteps. And he is in error when he follows his own desires, imagining that there is a better, easier, or shorter way than the way of the Messenger ﷺ The Prophet ﷺ said in the well-known Hadith: “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours (Islam) that which is not from it, it will be rejected.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Unfortunately, in our time, a person who adheres strictly to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ without mixing it with innovations is often labelled by others as a hater of the Prophet ﷺ. This is only because he refuses to practice things that were not taught by the Messenger ﷺ, even though some people wrongly justify such innovations in the name of love for him.
Yet the Prophet ﷺ himself clearly warned: “Beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation is misguidance.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Tirmidhi)
So we must ask: Who truly deserves to be called a lover of the Prophet ﷺ the one who follows his Sunnah faithfully, or the one who abandons it and introduces what the prophet never taught?
Allah says: “And whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.”
(Qur’an 4:80)
May Allah grant us sincere love for His Messenger ﷺ, guide us to follow His Sunnah with knowledge and wisdom, protect us from innovation and misguidance, and gather us under his banner on the Day of Judgment.
